HistoryIn 1857, the colony of Annaheim was founded by a group of German immigrants. “Anna” referred to the Santa Ana River that flowed through the area. “Heim” means home in the German language. Annaheim was later shortened to Anaheim. The colony was known for its extensive vineyards and numerous wineries. Around the 1870s, Chinese immigrants began working on these vineyards and formed what was the largest and oldest Chinatown in Orange County. Unfortunately, the last building in Anaheim’s Chinatown was demolished in 1940. Anaheim was incorporated as a city in 1876. Anaheim was the second city in Los Angeles County to be incorporated. In 1889 Orange County was carved out from Los Angeles County and Anaheim became part of the newly-formed county of Orange. When Pierce’s disease of grape, originally known as the Anaheim grapevine disease or grape mystery disease, destroyed 40,000 acres of grapes in the Anaheim area, residents began growing oranges. Curiously, Anaheim was also home to ostrich farms in the late 1800s. Among other things, the ostriches were used to pull carts. The city mainly remained an agricultural community until the Santa Ana Freeway (Interstate 5) and Disneyland were opened in 1955. At that point, Anaheim had only 87 hotel or motel rooms. Thereafter, Anaheim began rapidly developing into a suburban city and a tourism center.
