Over 5,600 regional jobs are attributed to CSUDH, as well as over $48 million in state and local tax revenue. Student enrollment exceeds 16,000. CSUDH was founded in 1960 as South Bay State College. Its first classes were held in 1965 at a temporary site in Rolling Hills Estates. At this time, the university was renamed as California State College at Palos Verdes. The following year, the university was renamed as California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Dignity Health Sports ParkDignity Health Sports Park was developed on a 125-acre site on the CSUDH campus as an Official U.S. Olympic Training Site. The complex is home to a 27,000-seat stadium for soccer, football, and other sports events; an 8,000-seat stadium used for tennis and concerts; a 2,000-seat track & field facility, and a 2,450-seat indoor Velodrome for track cycling. The complex opened in 2003 as the Home Depot Center. The professional soccer team, LA Galaxy, is based at Dignity Health Sports Park.
South Bay Pavilion Mall and Carson Event CenterSouth Bay Pavilion Mall is a partially-enclosed shopping mall that offers a variety of large and small retails establishments, including IKEA. The Carson Event Center offers 40,000 square feet of event and meeting space.
GovernmentThe City of Carson is a General Law City. Carson operates under the council-manager form of government. Carson has a general budget of over $100 million. City of Carson elected officials include the mayor, four city council members, the City Clerk, and the City Treasurer. Law enforcement services are provided through the Los Angeles County Sheriff"s Department based out of the Carson Sheriff's Station. Carson residents are also served by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Los Angeles County Public Library, and the Los Angeles Unified School District. The City sponsors several events, including a street fair and gala ball. The Public Works Department has a staff of over 140. The Landscape and Building Maintenance division of the Public Works Department oversees the maintenance of 16 community parks covering 123 acres.
A Brief HistoryRancho San Pedro, also known as Dominguez Rancho, began as a gift of about 75,000 acres to a Spanish soldier called Juan Jose Dominguez in 1784. This was the first of several Spanish land grants in what is now California. The rancho encompassed the present-day cities of Carson, Lomita, Redondo Beach, and Torrance, as well as the community of Wilmington and portions of San Pedro. The Dominguez Rancho homestead, the Dominguez Rancho Adobe, was built in 1826 near the center of the expansive rancho, in the Dominguez Hills.
The first air show in the United States took place near the present-day site of California State University, Dominguez Hills in 1910. The event was a great success, attracting crowds of over 175,000 at a time when the total population of Los Angeles County was only around 500,000.
Carson was in incorporated in 1968. It is one of the youngest cities in the area. For example, nearby Long Beach was incorporated in 1888 and Redondo Beach in 1892.
Dominguez Rancho AdobeDominguez Rancho Adobe listed is on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior and is a California Historical Landmark. The Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum hosts major events and offers public and private tours. The Battle of Dominguez Hills event features a re-enactment of an 1846 military engagement from the Mexican-American war. Día de Muertos Celebration is a festive time of remembrance rooted in the traditions of Mexico. La Pastorela is a traditional Mexican Christmas play. The site also features a rose garden, a cactus garden, and an orchard.
The International Printing MuseumThe International Printing Museum located in Carson is devoted to the history of books and printing. The museum contains a variety of printing machines, mimeographs, typecasting and typesetting equipment, typewriters, and much more.
