HistoryThe Kucamongan Native Americans were established in the area centuries before the arrival of Europeans. Cucamonga is derived from “Kucamonga,” the Tongva word interpreted variously to mean either “sandy place” or “place of many springs.” The area was under the control of Spain for more than half a century until Mexico won its independence in 1833. In 1839, Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado granted Tubercio Tapia 13,000 acres of land around what is now Rancho Cucamonga. Along with raising cattle, Tubercio Tapia founded the first winery in California on the land he was granted. The land was later purchased by John Rains. A post office was established in the area in 1864. Union Pacific Railroad later arrived in the area. Irrigation tunnels were dug into nearby Cucamonga Canyon and irrigation became available in the area in 1887. Early settlors then began cultivating olive and citrus along with other crops and vineyards. The Pacific Electric Railway line arrived in the area in 1913. The word “Cucamonga’ was used as part of a gag on Jack Benny’s long running radio show. Due to a prolonged drought cycle, the Cucamonga County Water District was established in 1955 to raise sufficient funds to ensure an adequate supply of water to the area. Rancho Cucamonga later began receiving imported water from the State Water Project. Prior to that tine, almost all of the water used in the area was sourced locally from mountain canyons and wells. In 1977, voters approved combining the unincorporated towns of Alta Loma, Etiwanda, and Cucamonga to create the City of Rancho Cucamonga.
